Ten years of intensive biodiversity work in the Sperrgebiet have been summarised in this comprehensive guide for conservation and natural resource managers. This 100-page publication is available at the Namibia Nature Foundation.

Biodiversity

From inventory to research and strategy, well over 20 years of biodiversity work in desert areas characterises EnviroScience’s activities in this field. These  contributed to brokering of partnerships, red list assessments, applications for world heritage site applications, environmental assessments, conservation area planning, and management and training in natural resource assessments. An active member of Namibia’s Biodiversity Task Force EnviroScience contributed substantially to Namibia’s biodiversity country study and National Biodiversity and Action Plan.

Sperrgebiet

Steeped in diamond mining history, the enigmatic Sperrgebiet, (German for “restricted area” ) in Namibia’s south-west corner belongs to one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots—the Succulent Karoo Biome. Conservation, tourism and park planning is on-going for this amazing wilderness area. EnviroScience has provided extensive background information and has been involved in every step leading to the proclamation of the Sperrgebiet as a National Park.

Biodiversity strategy

Incorporating biodiversity needs in business decisions is a requirement for corporations subscribing to the concept of sustainable development. EnviroScience has been instrumental in developing practical steps towards the biodiversity strategy for Rio Tinto’s owned Rössing Uranium Mine in Namibia and is presently developing Namdeb’s biodiversity strategy.

Inselbergs

The role of isolated mountains (inselbergs) in contributing to the conservation and maintenance of biodiversity is a critical question in areas where land degradation accelerates the loss of biodiversity. Plants and insects were used as indicators in an EU-funded four-country (South Africa, Namibia, Germany and United Kingdom) collaborative research project  across southern Africa’s Nama Karoo and Desert Biomes. Intensive field surveys lowered the red list status of Juttadinteria albata from “threatened with extinction” to “vulnerable”. Preservation of this rare succulent is a key action in Namdeb’s EMS.
